Cotswold Holiday Cottages in Oxfordshire

The Oxfordshire Cotswolds have a charm all of their own and in this part of the region there are many attractive villages and interesting places to visit including historic Burford with its hilly main street and medieval buildings. This delightful village is lined with charming shops, restaurants, art and antique shops to tempt you and the River Windrush to walk beside; close by is The Cotswold Wildlife Park, a splendid day out for the whole family with its beautifully kept gardens, picnic areas, a train to ride around the park and adventure play area, opens all year except Christmas Day. Minster Lovell with its 15th century manor house ruins (English Heritage site) and wonderful walks along the Windrush Valley.

Kelmscot Manor near Burford opens during the summer months and is the home of William Morris, famous for his wonderful textile and furniture designs (call 01367 252486 for opening times.) South of Burford is Filkins. Here is a traditional working woollen mill situated within 18th Century Cotswold buildings - you can learn how Cotswold wool has shaped the way this region has developed. There is a large shop if you want to buy a genuine woollen article. Witney is a large market town and close by here is Aston Pottery, a working pottery that supplies 200 shops over the country. You can see how they produce tea pots, plates and mugs or even have a go at decorating your own mug. Also not far from Witney is Cogges Farm, a working museum showing life as it was in Victorian times and set in an historic manor house and with its 20 acres and traditional breeds of animals is educational for children and adults alike!

While you are here do visit Great Tew, a perfect little village with its thatched cottages and popular pub The Falkland Arms, where you can enjoy an evening of music and good food

A day out to the county capitol of Oxford is a must. This splendid city (of dreaming spires) offers many attractions to visitors: guided walks around many of the magnificent colleges the city is renowned for (the popular Harry Potter story was partly filmed in Christchurch College refectory); the Bodlian Library; two excellent theatres; the magnificent Ashmolean Museum; Museum of History of Science; botanical gardens, wonderful shopping, ice skating; trips on the river on a punt if you are brave! Delightful walks along by the river. Adults and children alike will enjoy a visit to The Oxford Story on board a 25-minute indoor ‘dark’ ride you will travel through 900 years of University history, complete with sights, sounds and even smells.

Between Oxford and Chipping Norton is Woodstock, the home of Blenheim Palace. The park opens all year, the palace from approx February to early December. (call 01993 811325 for details.) Here there is a vast park for you to explore, with a lake where you can take a boat ride, a train ride, large walled in garden with giant draughts to play, a maze and of course the palace itself. Excellent guided tours round the palace.

You can reach Oxford by coach or train. The rail line to London takes approx 35 minutes from this area and stops at Moreton in Marsh, Kingham and Charlbury. You can also use a Park and Ride and save having to worry about parking your car in the city.
